Deploy on this map and try the signature Battlefield game mode: Conquest. You’ll fight in the streets of the Dutch city in its pristine, pre-war state before battles left it in devastation. Then there’s new scenery to explore: Rotterdam. In this mode, stay aggressive and tactical as an attacker – or use on-the-fly planning to keep the enemy at bay when defending. Day 2 features Breakthrough, where your team either attacks or defends vital sectors. In Fall of Norway, Day 1 will be spent in the Airborne mode, where you’ll paradrop down to the battlefield and be on either side of a fight where explosives are deployed on control points. Grand Operations contain several of these days, with one game mode featured in each. Those are in-game days, by the way – not the 24-hour kind. The snowy Norwegian landscapes of the Arctic Fjord map return from our recent Closed Alphas, and here you’ll be able to play both Conquest and two “days” of the Grand Operation Fall of Norway. And marketing for the game has been strange, with an odd tone depending on the trailer you watch, and its coming Battle Royale mode mostly kept under wraps so far.Įven with the move, this may be a tough year for the Battlefield franchise, but this was absolutely the right call to escape the deathtrap of COD and RDR. Battlefield V has attracted some level of “stupid gamer drama” for prominently including women in the war game, but in all likelihood, soft pre-sales probably have more to do with the fact that it looks a lot like BF1 and Call of Duty just did WWII with great success last year. Word is that early Battlefield V pre-orders are quite a bit down from both Battlefield 1 and certainly from Call of Duty, according to analysts, so EA may be bracing itself for an off year. November 20 isn’t totally without competition, as that’s about a week after the release of Fallout 76 and Let’s Go Pokémon, but it’s definitely a much better spot than October 19 was, smashed between the two biggest releases of the year. Given the huge profile of both Black Ops 4 and Red Dead 2, it seems like this time it was Battlefield that would be the crushed, rather than the crusher.Įven if they’re not being totally transparent about the strategy of this move (and I wouldn’t expect them to be), this is definitely the right call. Back then, the game was crushed between Call of Duty and EA’s own Battlefield 1, and sales suffered. I wrote about this two weeks ago in an article where I compared the situation to what happened with Titanfall 2 in 2016.
